Bologna, the vibrant capital of Emilia Romagna, is a city steeped in history, culture, and culinary excellence. Known as “La Dotta, La Grassa, e La Rossa” (The Learned, The Fat, and The Red), Bologna embodies its nickname with a prestigious university, rich cuisine, and striking red-hued buildings. The city center, one of Europe’s best-preserved, is adorned with elegant arcaded streets that stretch for miles, offering both shade and charm.

At the heart of Bologna lies Piazza Maggiore, a lively square surrounded by iconic landmarks. The Basilica of San Petronio, a stunning Gothic church, dominates the piazza with its unfinished façade and impressive interior. Nearby, the Fountain of Neptune, a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, adds to the square’s allure.

A short walk away are the famous Towers of Bologna, including the Torre degli Asinelli, the tallest tower in the city. Climbing its nearly 500 steps rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of Bologna’s terracotta rooftops. Surrounding the tower are several traditional restaurants where you can savor local specialties, including the iconic tortellini. These delicate pasta parcels, often filled with a mix of meat and cheese, are best enjoyed in a fragrant broth or a rich cream sauce, providing a true taste of Bologna’s culinary heritage.

Whether wandering its arcades, exploring its historic sites, or indulging in its renowned cuisine, Bologna promises a memorable experience that captures the essence of Italy.

At the end of the visit we will leave for the next stop at Ferrara.

Stop At: Ferrara

Ferrara, a jewel of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, is a city of timeless charm and historical significance. Governed by the influential Este family for over three centuries, Ferrara blossomed during the Renaissance, becoming a cultural and artistic hub. Its well-preserved historic center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique blend of medieval and Renaissance architecture.

At the heart of the city stands the Castello Estense, an imposing moated fortress built in 1385. Originally a military stronghold, it later became the luxurious residence of the Este family. Visitors can explore its grand halls, dungeons, and prison cells, offering a glimpse into the city’s storied past. Ferrara’s Cathedral of San Giorgio, constructed in 1135, is another architectural masterpiece, showcasing a stunning combination of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles.
